On Sat. 1/30/2010 the Florida USBA Regional Qualifier
There were 6 players vying for the right to represent Florida at the Nationals in Tacoma, WA. The clear favorite was 7 time USBA national champion Carlos Hallon. The format was a 6 man round robin with 25 point matches.
The 1st round proved to be critical as Henry Ugartechea nearly upset local favorite Carlos Hallon. Henry ran a 5 in the 4th inning and led by as much as 16-9 when Carlos fought back with two back to back runs of 4 to pull ahead. With a score of 24-22 Henry scored two and missed his out shot by a millimeter leaving a simple shot that Carlos scored to take the victory 25-24.
In other notable matches newcomer and New Wave room rep. Victor Cuzzi nearly upset Carlos as well with a hill hill finish. This match was on live webstream and was a slugfest from start to finish.
Jim Bishop from Orlando played brilliantly defeating Henry 25-20 in his last match.
Snowbird Mike Brodie played valiantly defeating Jim Bishop in the first round and giving everybody a run for their money.
Top local talent Alfonso Torres with a record of 3-1 dropped a nailbiter to Henry with a 25-20 score allowing Henry to move into 2nd place overall.
Room owner Hernando Pineres received applause and accolades from all for being such a gracious host as the event wrapped up with a photo shoot and farewells.
Thanks to all players that participated and showed their support. Special thanks to Joshua from livebilliards.net for webstreaming the event. |
