Shaun Murphy Scores A Vital Victory

Shaun Murphy scored a vital 2-0 victory over Mark Selby at the Wuzhou International Group Jiangsu Classic to take pole position in Group Two with just one round of matches to go in the round robin stages.

Murphy’s win over Selby, which featured breaks of 46 and 52, elevated him to first place in the group, as Selby also lost 2-1 to Marco Fu. Hong Kong’s Fu beat Ali Carter 2-0 with a top run of 81 and now stands second in the group, alongside Murphy with three wins out of four.

Crucible runner-up Murphy faces Ali Carter in his final group match, while Fu plays Jin Long and Selby takes on Joe Perry, with whom he is tied in third place.

In Group One, Ryan Day scored a 2-1 victory over Stephen Hendry in the best match of the tournament so far. Welshman Day opened with a 68, Hendry responded with a 102 before Day won the decider with a 76. That puts him top of the group, followed by defending champion and home favourite Ding Junhui, who edged out Peter Ebdon 2-1 thanks to a yellow-to-pink clearance in the decider.

Li Hang suffered his first defeat of the event, losing 2-0 to Mark Allen, leaving him in third place. Li faces Stephen Hendry in his last match, with Day and Ding going head to head.

The top two in each group after tonight’s matches go through to Saturday’s semi-finals.
